Through movement, Malia articulates the words of music. The beauty of raqs sharqi (belly dance) is an ancient art form that Malia fully embraces with excellence. Her discipline and passion to excel fuels her desires to always learn and grow as an artist.
Malia's style is mainly Egyptian cabaret, though she believes all styles are intriguing and works to incorporate into her dance anything she believes accentuates the music. She is proficient not only with rhythms and fluidity, but also with a variety of props including zils (finger cymbals), sword and veil. In addition, this dancer loves raqs al assaya (cane dance) and many other folkloric dances from the Middle East.
Malia attributes her talent to years of hard work and from studying with top local instructors including Delilah, Mish Mish and most extensively with Nadira. She currently performs solo at many venues and events in the Greater Seattle region and is also a member of the Blue Lotus Dance Company, directed by Nalini. Blue Lotus specializes in belly dance and bollywood dance and is available for many events including weddings, birthday celebrations and more.
Besides dance, Malia is involved in volunteering with Middle East Arts International a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting excellence in Middle East-inspired dance and music. Malia also holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Biology and enjoys all of the outdoor activities the northwest has to offer.
With the language of dance Malia is able to engage the viewer into a personal journey through joy, love, loss, humor and all else experienced in life.
